Bryan Lewis Saunders’ self portraits under the influence of “every drug known to man”

Washington D.C based artist Bryan Lewis Saunders has been in the news recently because of his body of work poetically titled, “Drugs”.  Drugs is a plethora of self portraits drawn after the intake of varies drugs i.e cocaine, weed, DMT etc. The idea is intriguing but I dont think that Mr Saunders has been all to honest in his drawings. For instance I suspect that taking Adderall (used in the treatment of ADHD) doesnt make you draw yourself as an adder. Unless it does, I have never tried it so I dont know. The internet has jumped on Saunders like an adder on… an adders prey? Praising him for his commitment and insightful outcomes. One of his self portraits is good (Morphine IV) but still only aesthetically. I dont feel as though I am getting an insight into the mind of a man consumed by the drugs he is taking. Not like reading Hunter S. Thompson which is more honest. Saunders is, allegedly, a man so high but still able to remember to draw himself. Thompson is reflective and often writes after the experience allowing himself to fully understand a situation and his place within it.
